“My grandmother is my inspiration,” says Betty as she proudly holds up a photo of her grandmother Eulalia. Betty is the owner of a charming taco shop called BMC Market. Many of the recipes were inspired by her grandmothers own recipes. Betty’s favourite menu item? The Barbocoa taco. “My grandmother used to make these for her community back home in Mexico.” Growing up in Morelia, Mexico, Betty used to keep a keen eye on her grandmother while she worked. She attributes her work ethic to her. Today she shares her family recipes with local Winnipeggers and tourists who visit either of her two locations.
Betty’s first shop opened on Osborne eight years ago. While her dreams were big, the building owner was skeptical to start as he informed her that the Latin community was small in Winnipeg. Betty believed in her dream enough that she persuaded him to start her on a 1-year lease. He agreed and she opened BMC Market shortly thereafter. The market originally offered Mexican groceries, including small gifts such as piñatas that were made by Betty’s daughter. While the business was doing well enough, Betty realized early on that she wanted something more to offer to the city. She wanted to bring a proper taste of Mexico to Winnipeg.
When asked what Betty loves most about her business, she smiles proudly and says that she loves having the opportunity to share her culture with her children who were born in North America. Not only does she get to share it with her kids, she also loves sharing it with the local community in Winnipeg. “My favourite thing about Winnipeg? The people. They are awesome.” Betty truly feels at home here, and now, she can bring us back to her first home with her while we have a taste of her authentic Mexican tacos.
