Four years ago Jill packed up a U-Haul in Vancouver and moved to Winnipeg on a chilly October night. While the air was brisker and the horizon was much flatter, it took her only minutes – eight, to be exact – to realize how much this city had to offer. She was particularly taken by Osborne Village which offered a feeling of vibrancy and diversity. It had a little something for everyone. It was, however, missing one thing. Jill missed the thrift stores of Vancouver where she could find rad, and often locally made, clothing. She felt that Osborne would be the perfect spot for such a store.
Four years later, Jill reminisces on her early days in Winnipeg as she folds up my own rad find at her store, Shop Take Care. This charming little shop will be turning two in February and it will likely be around for many more years to come. It truly brings colourful new life to Osborne Village with its eclectic mix of gender neutral pre-loved and new clothing, many of which are locally designed. From vintage coats to new clothing made of recycled fabrics, Shop Take Care has it all. And to make things even better, the store is affordable and accessible for us bargain-loving Winnipeggers.
Jill has made quite a big impact on the Winnipeg scene already since she made her move from Vancouver. Her goals for the future? She plans to become more involved with her charitable work in the city as she believes it is very important to give back and provide to the local community. When asked what she loves so much about our city, Jill had many things to say. As a girl who grew up in Alberta, she has an inherent love for the prairie smell. There’s a sense of comfort in the cold, dry air. And of course, there are the people. “There is something about Winnipeg. Everyone is in it together. We are inherently community-driven and the small business community is insanely supportive.”
Jill’s favourite style decade? The 90’s. Obviously.
